Q: What does GAIN stand for?
A> GAIN is an acronym for Golf: Accessible and Inclusive Networks

Q: How was GAIN started?
A> GAIN was developed over a 3+ year period as a National Alliance for Accessible Golf Research and Demonstration Project. The MODEL developed, confirmed that golf can be an effective vehicle for including people with disabilities into the mainstream of their community.

Q: How does GAIN work?
A> GAIN can be implemented within organizations or communities in different ways, depending upon the interests and desired outcomes of the organization.

CAMP GAIN can be implemented on a short term basis (like other typical summer or vacation camps) at any time of the year that an organization would like to “try out” an inclusive golf program. Typically, camp programs run 1 to 2 weeks, but the program can be structured and scheduled to meet the needs of the organization.

GAIN PARTNERS are organizations that want to add an inclusive component to their existing program. These might include weekly sports programs, First Tee or Junior Golf programs or other programs that teach golf and life skills to participants.

GAIN COMMUNITIES are reoccurring year around programs (or seasonal) that provide an ongoing golf and community integration program within a community.

Q: What does it cost to operate a GAIN program?
A> Costs will vary greatly depending upon the type of program selected and the resources that an organization or community has in place to facilitate a program. Available volunteers and staff that can devote time to the program will greatly reduce the actual costs to operate the program. A full year around GAIN Community program could cost up to $50,000 per year. A CAMP or PARTNER program will cost much less, depending upon the number of participants included and the length of the program.

Q: Are grants available to assist us in starting a GAIN program?
A> Yes. The National Alliance for accessible golf can provide financial, technical assistance and training support for an agency to initiate and conduct a GAIN program.

Q: How do I know if we are eligible and/or be considered for a grant?
A> If you are a 501(c)3 or governmental organization you may be eligible for a grant.

Q: What are the expectations of an applicant?
A> The Alliance is interested in supporting organizations that can demonstrate the following:

A commitment to accessibility and inclusion
A commitment to sustaining the program
Ability to create funding streams and in-kind support for the program

Q: What does a GAIN program actually consist of? A> Regardless of the type of GAIN program implemented, a GAIN program includes a series of golf instructional sessions and inclusive activities. Scheduling GAIN programs can be as often as daily or as spread out as bi-weekly, depending upon the organization needs. Individual sessions have ranged from one hour to full day sessions. The Alliance will work with you in developing a schedule of activities.

Q: What if we don’t know if we have the staff qualifications to conduct a GAIN program?
A> Alliance staff will work with you on identifying appropriate staff, volunteers and participants. In addition, Alliance staff is available to provide ongoing technical assistance to your program staff. As part of the grant process, the Alliance will provide a training program (generally 1-2 days) for your staff to insure that they are prepared to conduct the GAIN program.

Q: How do we get started?
A> The best way to start is to have a GAIN Starter Kit sent to you. This CD provides more details on everything from a detailed description of the program philosophy; specific examples of program activities and instruction, site application and funding guidelines. You may also contact Alliance staff for more information and answers to your questions.

The GAIN Quiet Public sale Opens October first.

Starting on October 1, 2010, National Alliance for Accessible Golf will be auctioning off a number of fun and unique items to bid on to raise money for our local GAIN sites.

What Your Participation Supports

Your participation will support the programs of the National Alliance for Accessible Golf, most specifically GAIN (Golf: Accessible and Inclusive Networks). GAIN couples community programs and resources to provide opportunities for people with disabilities to become involved in the game of golf – through learning golf skills and by involving the participants in the life skills and social aspects of the game as well. Your financial support will help to support and enhance community-based GAINTM programs throughout the country.

In 2009, more than 300 people including individuals with disabilities, mentors, volunteers and instructors participated in a GAIN program in their local community. Through support and grants from the Alliance, five sites were funded in the following locations throughout the country including Accessible Golf of Wilmington in Wilmington, NC; the Children’s Course, Home of The First Tee, in Gladstone, OR; the Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation in Salt Lake County, UT; the Ability Center of Greater Toledo in partnership with The First Tee of Lake Erie in Toledo, OH; and the University of Southern Mississippi Access Recreation Camp. The impact of participating in GAIN is significant for the individuals as well as the volunteers involved.

Visual Design

The pages within National Alliance for Accessible Golf use simple HTML tables for layout in order to display consistently across browsers and platforms. Videos & Captioning

Streaming video clips are presented throughout National Alliance for Accessible Golf. Synchronized captions have been included with all videos so that all individuals can enjoy them.

To enable/disable captioning in RealPlayer 8 and earlier : select Preferences by right-clicking in the video display window. Select the Content tab. Choose Settings from the Accessibility section at the bottom. Check (or uncheck to disable) the “Use accessibility features when available” checkbox. Selcet OK, then OK again in the Preferences window. You will need to restart the video for your changes to take effect.

For RealOne: Start the RealOne player. Select “Preferences” from the Tools menu at the top. Click on “Content” in the left pane, and check the box that says “Use supplemental text captioning when available.”

Effective January 1, Tampa-based Ace Golf is acquiring member-owned Wentworth Golf Club. Wentworth joins the Ace Golf family that includes the Pebble Creek Golf Club in New Tampa and Ace Golf Ranges in Brandon and Riverview. For the first time since it was founded in 1990, Wentworth will be open to public play as a semi-private club, and will still maintain an exclusive membership at what is considered one of the finest golf clubs in the Tampa Bay area.

Located in the East Lake area of north Pinellas County, Wentworth Golf Club is considered one of the more challenging and prestigious 18-Hole Golf Clubs in the area. Wentworth is best known for its brand new Platinum Paspallum greens, naturally rolling terrain with abundant wildlife and intricate layout set amongst million dollar homes in the upscale Wentworth community. The Steve Smyer’s designed par-71 golf course is one of several high-end courses that he designed in the area, including Old Memorial in Tampa, Grand Pines and Isleworth in Orlando, and Southern Dunes in Haines City. Wentworth also has a driving range, practice putting green and short game area.

Ace Golf is family-owned by married couple Bill Place and Su Lee. Place started Ace Golf 18 years ago as Tampa-area Golf Practice Range facilities that included Miniature Golf, Batting Cages, and Golf Pro Shops. In 2005, Ace Golf purchased the Pebble Creek Golf Club, renovated it extensively, returned the club to profitability and nearly doubled the number of members and rounds played there. In addition to Pebble Creek, Ace Golf has Golf Practice Ranges in Brandon and Riverview.

“I’ve been looking for another Golf Course to add to our portfolio for the last two years,” says Place, “and I was very impressed at what great condition Wentworth is in”. “The members here love this course and it shows in how carefully they have taken care of it and its beautiful English-manor style clubhouse.”

Ace Golf has aggressive plans to expand Wentworth’s member base, introduce limited public play, improve the golf course and build its banquet and restaurant business. For the first time ever, anyone may call Wentworth and make a tee time. To the extent that the member base grows and members fill tee times, the rest of the tee sheet will be available to the public. Many area golfers that have not previously been able to play Wentworth are excited atthe prospect of being able to play starting on New Year’s Day.

Golf course improvements will include a widening of some of the fairways, enlarging tees, and establishing new tees for longer and shorter play to accommodate better golfers and junior golfers.

A new English Pub open to the public will be established later this summer in Wentworth’s clubhouse. Ace Golf successfully added a popular neighborhood Irish Pub to its Pebble Creek Golf Club. The Wentworth Pub will expand on the club’s English theme with a classic Pub featuring English Beers and Pub food. Other changes include an expansion of the member dining room for public wedding receptions, banquets and parties. Also, the veranda will be expanded and improved for outdoor dining. The Club will continue to offer exclusive member and golf guest dining facilities while adding the pub that will be open to the public.

To lead the new Wentworth Golf Club, Ace Golf has hired PGA Professional Steve Martin, who previously worked as General Manager of the Cheval Golf and Country Club in Tampa, and as Marketing Director at the Cypress Run Golf Club.
